Rose Bowles' Chocolate Sauce
Of all my mother's childhood memories, one story that stands out in my mind is of the time she skipped school to go to the White City Fair, an amusement park by Lake Quinsigamond in Shrewsbury. (White City closed in the early '60's and is now a shopping center). She won the door prize that day ... a new sled! Of course, a truant officer saw what was going on and informed her mother. When little Shirlee came up the hill to Elm St., well after dark, happily towing her new sled behind her, Rose was relieved to see her, but wouldn't let her keep the sled.
My mother has always been a bit of an "imp." She also has a bit of a sweet tooth, and now I can see that it all began with her mother. When mom came across this recipe, she sent it to me with the following note:
"For a special treat for us 'kids,' Mom would make bread pudding and put this homemade chocolate sauce on it. Yummyi"
1 cup sugar
1/3 cup milk
1/2 tsp vanilla
1 Tbsp butter
2 Tbsp cocoa
Cook 5 mins. Remove from heat. Add vanilla. Beat until thick.
